Introducing SURF  |  Applying for SURF

The Division of Molecular and Life Sciences (DMLS) has operated the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program since 2000 as one of the sponsored projects by the Brain Korea (BK) 21 Program.

The DMLS SURF program, which runs for six weeks every summer, is open
to outstanding undergraduate students on their junior or senior year from universities other than Postech, both at home and abroad, and is designed to provide them with opportunities to participate in various research topics under the guidance of Postech faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students in the Division of Molecular and life sciences.

Every summer 40 to 50 students are accepted in the program, and assigned to the laboratories of participating professors. Throughout the program, students undertake research topics using the state-of-the-art facilities, while engaging in lab meetings, lab MT, and seminars. They are required to submit research proposal (2nd week), progress report (4th week), and final report (6th week). A special seminar is arranged at the end where some students present their research results in the presence of professors and other students. This experience gives a firm idea of what it means to become a graduate student at Postech DMLS and to conduct advanced researches in the field of life sciences. As more and more students are interested in this program, the number of applicants has grown so fast that the competition runs as high as 5 to 1.

Students are paid a stipend of 500,000 Korean won, and provided with free accommodation at the student dormitory. They also have free access to library and sports facilities during the stay. Upon completion of the program, they are awarded the Certificate of SURF Completion.
