Fixation of CO2 and Production of Astaxanthin

Objective & Scope

1. Characterization of biological Astaxanthin production mechanism
2. Optimization of biological Astaxanthin production
3. Development of bioreactor for Astaxanthin production

Main Contents

Carbon dioxide is considered as a major greenhouse gas causing the global warming problem. Biological CO2 fixation (BCF) is thought to be an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient process to remove CO2 using microalgal photosynthesis.

Up to now, microalgal carbon dioxide fication combined with value-added chemical production has rarely been tried. Microalgal Haematococcus pluvialis have been received a great attention due to the accumulation of high level of Astaxanthin(up to 4%) which is a high-value carotenoid (US $2500/Kg) and of which major market is a pigmentation source in aquaculture, and a natural colorant in food industry.
The purpose of this research is to fix carbon dioxide and simultaneously to produce astaxanthin using high-density dulture of H.pluvialis. A concentric tube air-lift photobioreactor was designed and constructed, combining the advantages of an air-lift bioreactor and an internal radiation system.
