High-rate Slurry-phase Decomposition of Food Wastes

Objective & Scope

1. Development of food waste treatment process
2. Evaluation of operational parameters

Main Contents

In Korea, an abundant food culture has resulted in production of large amount of food wastes and the treatment problem of such food wastes has been the one of social problems from the viewpoint of the protection of environment. So far, techniques such as landfill, incineration, recycle and decomposition have been used for treating food wastes and it was considered that decompositon technique was a feasible solution for the treatment of food wastes in our country.

In this study, a bioreactor incorporating a slurry-phase reaction was developed for high-rate decomposition of food wastes with a ultimate goal of complete decompositon leaving minimal residue of food wastes. The performance of the slurry-phase reactor system was quite remarkable in respect to the rate and the degree of decomposition. From long-term operation in large scale, the possibility on commercialization of slurry-phase food wastes decomposition system was proved.
