My dear proud freshmen!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new members of the POSTECH community. I am delighted that you have brightened POSTECH with your presence. Moreover, I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations and sincere appreciation to the parents for their support and devotion to these outstanding students.

Dear new Postechians!

You play the leading role on this stage called POSTECH. It is here where you will earnestly prepare for your future as you explore and contemplate with your newfound independence. I believe that it was a long journey for you to have come this far. On behalf of POSTECH members, I would like to offer my wholehearted congratulations on your new beginning.

You are now at a new starting point in your lives. Though your elementary and secondary education may also have significant meaning, as you can recognize from the term
“compulsory education,”there had to be lack of autonomy and initiative. On the contrary, your university experience will be completely different. At university, no one will watch over your shoulders. POSTECH may equip you with the right tools to build your own paths, but you are the drivers of your success.

It is your responsibility to find the fountain of knowledge and enrich your life by overcoming the challenges along that path. Therefore, the success of your university experience depends on your diligence and devotion. Your attitude towards life and how you conduct it during your university years will determine your future, and even further, your whole life. I hope for you to
remain true to those values.

The person who is prepared owns the future, for we must build the future ourselves. I ask all of you to create a grand vision for your future and persistently work hard to realize it. What is the
meaning of life if one does not have his or her dreams and visions? The famous activist, Helen Keller, said,
“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”As you all know, Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing after suffering from an illness in her early childhood. However, her strong determination allowed her to lead an extraordinary life, and for that, she is greatly respected by the world.

Persistent single movements can take you to the finish line of a 42-kilometer-marathon. Likewise, the most certain way to realize your grand dream is to live each moment with integrity. Bear in mind that the most important day of your life is today. As the saying goes,
“The present is the best present.”The biggest gift you have in your hands is today and this moment. I hope for you to spend each day of your university life fruitfully and rewardingly.

During your years at POSTECH, you will mature into productive members of the global society and develop your abilities to meet the needs of accelerating innovation of the world. Not only from studying in each of your fields, but also from being well-read, will you become outstanding scholars and brilliant intellectuals. Reading is the only and fastest way to becoming so. I would like to especially emphasize reading as an essential part of your campus lives.

My dear freshmen!

Lastly, I would like to ask you to gain physical strength. Such strength is necessary to realize your dreams, and to devote your lives not just to yourselves, but to others. I hope for you to appreciate the priceless value of sports when you go head to head on the field, the perseverance of getting back up when you have fallen, and the beauty from winning in fair competition. If you
wish for your dreams to come true, you will need to be healthy, both in mind and body.

As you may already know, POSTECH, founded 30 years ago, is the first research-oriented university in Korea. The advantage of being located in the industrial capital, Pohang, and the programs which will nurture you into world-leading talented individuals, are now within your reach. POSTECH is fully equipped for you to strive for excellence. I wish for you to prepare for the future with pride. POSTECH will be a pillar of support, but it is on you to use that pillar to stand up on your own two feet.

Once again, I would like to extend my deepest congratulations, and I wish for our new Postechians to grow into excellent intellectuals who will contribute to humanity.
Thank you.
