Nanostructured Membranes for the Separation of Proteins and Biomaterials

We have been studying on the characterization of Nano-structured materials and making Nano-patterned templates using by self-assembled block copolymers for the development of tera-bit memory device and membrane with nano-holes. The alignment of nano-domains perpendicular to the substrate such as silicone wafer and ITO (indium tin oxide) was done using surface modification and E-field.

The block copolymers with various types of nanodomains as well as the order to disorder transition behaviors are first theoretically designed on the basis of the molecular simulation and polymer physics, and then synthesized by anionic or living radical polymerization. These nanodomains are characterized using by various techniques, synchrotron small-angle X-ray (SAXS) in Pohang, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and rheology.

We also develop the pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) used for silicone wafer cutting and grinding and medical purpose. The interface development of reactive polymer blends and interfacial analysis are currently studied using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and neutron reflectivity.

We are doing our best to impact significantly on leading communities of polymer science and engineering.
