[Recognized among top 2% in biomedical engineering field... Elevated international status in biomedical engineering through "photoacoustic imaging technology research"]
Professor Chulhong Kim of POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Convergence IT Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology has been named a Fellow of the prestigious American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) for 2025.
AIMBE Fellowship is an honor granted to only the top 2% of researchers worldwide in the fields of medicine and bioengineering. Its prestige is further elevated by its inclusion of Nobel Prize winners and members of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
Professor Kim was recognized for his "contributions to multiparametric and multimodal photoacoustic imaging research and clinical applications." Until last year, only five Korean researchers had been elected as AIMBE Fellows, making Professor Kim's selection a significant achievement that enhances the international standing of Korea’s biomedical engineering technology.
Photoacoustic imaging technology, which combines light and ultrasound, is an advanced medical imaging technology that enables more accurate and safer diagnoses than conventional imaging techniques. Professor Kim has published 254 papers in prestigious domestic and international academic journals, and his research has been cited more than 20,000 times, demonstrating significant influence in the academic community. Additionally, to facilitate the clinical application of his research, he has filed and registered approximately 60 domestic and international patents, and has contributed to the advancement of the medical industry through technology transfers and startups.
"Being named an AIMBE Fellow is a meaningful acknowledgment of global recognition of Korea's research standards," said Professor Kim. “I will continue to dedicate myself to research so that Korea's biomedical engineering technology can gain even greater international recognition."
Established in 1991, AIMBE has inducted over 3,000 Fellows to date. The induction and welcome ceremony for the 171 newly elected Fellows of 2025, including Professor Kim, was held on March 31 in Arlington, Virginia, during 2025 AIMBE Annual Conference.
