Professor Chulhong Kim of POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Convergence IT Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology, has been selected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE), one of the world’s most prestigious organizations in the field of biomedical engineering.

This fellow is a lifetime honor with no term limit, and Professor Kim was officially listed as a Fellow on September 1. The induction ceremony took place on September 30 during the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, held from September 29 to October 4 in Adelaide, Australia.

IAMBE Fellow is awarded by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) to researchers who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and international leadership in the fields of medicine and biomedical engineering.

Professor Kim is a pioneer in the field of photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging. His group significantly contributes to developing multiparametric and multimodal photoacoustic imaging and its clinical applications.

To date, he has published 268 papers, cited over 21,500 times, and has led practical applications of his work through more than 70 patents, technology transfers, and start-up ventures. His accomplishments have been consistently recognized both domestically and internationally, including his recent election as a regular member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea in 2025,.

“This recognition is not only a personal honor, but also a testament to POSTECH and to the international standing of Korea’s biomedical engineering,” said Professor Kim. “I will continue to contribute to human health through both academic research and clinical and industrial applications.”

The International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) is the world’s largest biomedical engineering organization, comprising more than 120,000 members from over 60 countries. Fellows are elected through recommendations from experts worldwide and a rigorous selection process.
