The Institute for Basic Science (IBS) is a national research institute established by the South Korean government to conduct world-class basic science research. Starting with the selection of the first Research Centers in 2012, IBS now operates two Institutes, five Research clusters, and thirty centers in mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, interdisciplinary studies, and earth science. IBS selects Campus Centers at universities specializing in science and technology throughout Korea. One key advantage of IBS Campus Centers is that they can immerse themselves in their chosen research topics for extended periods without the pressure of competing for research grants.
POSTECH is currently operating three IBS Campus Centers. In 2023, we completed the construction of the IBS POSTECH Campus Building. World-class basic science research is being conducted in the fields of mathematics and physics.
